Consultation
One of the best ways to reduce anxiety over your surgery is to be an informed patient, ie to know what to expect before, during, and after your procedure. Your initial appointment will consist of a consultation explaining your diagnosis and treatment options, as well as the benefits and risks of your surgery. This will also give you a chance to meet and get to know your doctor prior to your surgery and ask any questions you may have in a more relaxed environment. We set aside time for this each day so that both the patient and doctor do not feel rushed. A consultation prior to your surgery will also allow us to check on insurance coverage for the proposed procedures, and hopefully limit your out-of-pocket expense.
In general, IV anesthesia will not be performed on the same day as your consultation. Occasionally, simple surgery under local anesthesia or nitrous oxide sedation can be done the same day as the consultation. However, a complex medical history or treatment plan will require an evaluation and a second appointment to provide treatment on another day. Should you have an emergent situation that may require IV anesthesia that day, please have nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours prior to your appointment. You will also need an adult who can remain in the office and who can drive you home after your surgery.
IMPORTANT: All patients under the age of 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at the consultation and surgical visits.
Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your consultation:
- Your surgical referral slip and any X-rays if applicable.
- A list of medications you are presently taking.
- The completed health history form. If there has not been time to receive it by mail at your address, we do ask that you to arrive early for your appointment so that the appropriate forms may be filled out prior to seeing the doctor.
- If you have medical or dental insurance, bring the necessary completed forms. This will save time and allow us to help you process any claims.
Please alert the office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern prior to surgery (i.e. you have to take an antibiotic prior to dental surgery for a heart murmur, artificial heart valves or joint, rheumatic fever; or problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.) or if you are on any medication (i.e. heart medications, aspirin, anticoagulant therapy, etc.)
X-Rays
If your dentist or physician has taken x-rays, you may request that they forward them to our office. If there is not enough time, please pick them up and bring them to our office. If additional films are necessary, they can be taken at our facility.
